Welcoming Allison: Our New MSC!

3/16/2022 (Permalink)

Marketing Support Coordinator in front of SERVPRO Green and Logo Allison recently graduated from College and has a background in newspaper writing.

Working at SERVPRO provides room for opportunity, growth, and personal connection. Even within a short amount of time, new employees can witness an atmosphere of diversity and respect shown throughout the various SERVPRO locations, as well as a degree of flexibility.

According to Forbes article “3 Benefits of Diversity in the Workplace,” having a diverse workforce produces higher financial returns, expands a customer market, and promotes professional growth. To a potential employee, this implementation of inclusion is essential. It was even reported that one in three job seekers would not apply to a company that does not seem diverse. SERVPRO recognizes this importance and makes sure to impose and support a code of diversity and inclusion.

Today, prospective employees seek jobs that respect their time, salary, and work-life balance desires. Gone are the days of new employees putting in extra work for an underpaid wage in hopes of one day getting promoted. Interviewees are now making their expectations and values clear to employers from the start.

A study in a recent Forbes article “To Lure Workers, Companies Are Giving New Employees Their First Weeks Off, Speeding Up Retirement Plan Access—And Piling On The Cash,” noted that 20% of companies in a survey “were using sign-on bonuses more than before the pandemic” to incentivize employees to onboard.

A company in the article even requested workers to take a “recharge day” each month to promote a positive work-life balance. SERVPRO offers a sign-on bonus for many positions to keep up with these changes and notices the desires of future applicants such as a flexible schedule, valuable benefits, and a fair pay rate.

The P.A.S.S. Method

2/11/2022 (Permalink)

Girl demonstrating how to use a fire extingui0sher By learning the P.A.S.S. method, you add time back on the clock before the fire grows out of control.

Would you know how to stop a fire at a moment's notice? If you have never operated a fire extinguisher, you should read closely as we go through the P.A.S.S. method. By following these four easy steps, you can ensure that you keep your property safe from a potential complete loss.

Pull the pin. When the pin is pulled, it will also break the tamper seal.

Aim low; the hottest part of the fire is at the base of the fire. That means that when directing the extinguisher, you should aim towards the base/ hottest part of the fire.

Squeeze the handle. This will send the extinguishing agent into the fire, which ultimately ends the fire.

Sweep from side to side. It is best not to let go of the handle when directing the agent until the fire appears to be out.

You can save your property from a potential complete loss by learning these quick and easy tips on operating an extinguisher. If the fire grows out of control, leave the property immediately. No fire is worth jeopardizing your life as all materials are replaceable. If you need our fire restoration services, don't hesitate to get in touch with SERVPRO® of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia at 660-886-5194.

Magic Drying Techniques

2/11/2022 (Permalink)

Carpet Hooked to air movers to provide detail drying When rugs don't get adequately dried, they run the risk of microbial growth! This is how we ensure that doesn't happen!

Are you a fan of the movie Aladdin? If so, you will enjoy this magical drying technique that brings carpets to life. When our team of professionals arrives at a job affected by water, they have their procedures put into place that optimizes the drying time of certain materials. Some common elements we use when drying certain materials are airflow and humidity.

Our floating carpet technique entails setting air movers up under the wet carpet casting a constant airflow that drys the rug out. You might be wondering why we call it magical, and it's because the carpet is hooked to the air movers, which keeps them from moving. The air movers being placed at each corner displays this floating waving motion. The importance of not adding too many air movers is to keep in mind, which can cause an aggressive wave motion, resulting in the tac strip separating from the backing.

To ensure you aren't damaging your carpet, you should call SERVPRO® of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia at 660-886-5194. Our team of trained professionals will have all your carpets floating like they were from Aladdin.

Are You Stranded? This is What You Will Need!

Man Grabbing His Emergency Bag After Getting Stuck By packing an emergency bag, you prepare yourself for the worst-case scenario, which could help save your life.

Although we can't make an auto claim with your insurance, we wanted to take some time to go over some essential winter must-haves to keep in your car. If you haven't heard, the winter storm that pushed through the region last Tuesday has caused drivers to be stranded for 24 hours on I-95 in Virginia. In this situation, people had to bear through the below-freezing temperatures. Many had no food or water and no idea when they would be moving again. The line of cars stretching 50 miles long with some parts of the interstate still closed due to government officials advising drivers to avoid I-95 altogether. Here are some must-haves to keep in your car if you get stranded on the side of the road.

Snow Removal Tools

When you get stuck on the side of the road, your first course of action would see if you can get your car unstuck. If you don't have tools, you might even try shoveling the snow out of the way yourself. By leaving these products in your vehicle, you will have a better chance of getting your car out.

  • Ice Scraper/Snow Brush
    • This helps keep your view out of the windows clear with no obstruction.
  • Shovel
    • If you have a shovel, you will be able to clear the snow under and around the car to help get more traction without all the snow. We advise that you start by making a clear and direct path to get you back on the road. Take some time and clear off the car so it is apparent that you require assistance. You should also ensure that you have dug out the tailpipe to allow a path for the exhausted to escape.
  • Kitty Litter
    • Once the car is cleared and you want to turn the car on, you might want to have kitty litter to put on the path you created. Also, you should add some litter under the tire to help the tires gain traction on the snow-covered ground.

Hunkering Down Tools

Let's pretend that after trying all of the listed tips above, you can still free the car. This is when you need to hunker down and wait for someone to help rescue you. These are the tools you will need to ensure that you can stay warm during what could be hours of waiting.

  • Extra Set of Clothing
    • When you get stuck, you have to conserve the gas in the tank to ensure that you can drive away once rescued. It will get cold in the car, so packing extra gloves, clothes, hats, or blankets can help ensure you can stay warm.
  • Emergency Flares
    • When stuck in the snow, you will be surprised at how fast your car can get completely covered. Suppose you notice a snow truck or any other form of an emergency vehicle. In that case, you will need to capture their attention as your location might be hard to see. An emergency flare will capture their attention, and you can be rescued faster.
  • Jumper Cables
    • If you have your car sitting on the side of the road while you have the engine running, it will cause your battery to die in most cases. So by keeping your emergency jumper cables in your car can help start your vehicle.
  • Food/Water
    • Usually, you wouldn't spend extra time driving your car in the vehicle. When you are stuck, you should be prepared for being stranded for hours on end. By keeping food and water in the car, you can prevent anyone from going hungry.

Most importantly, if you are driving somewhere when there is a projected winter storm, please adjust your time to allow extra travel time. If you find yourself stuck on the side of the road, please call these emergency road services:

You Have To Watch Out For Those Ice Dams

1/5/2022 (Permalink)

This is how an Ice Dam is created. As you can see from the SERVPRO diagram that the snow/ice melts and freezes on the slope of the roof creating ice dams.

An Ice What?

If you have never heard of an ice dam before, a roof has nonuniform roof surface temperatures that cause the snow and ice to melt. This becomes problematic because it refreezes on the areas of the roof that is frozen. This causes pools of water to sit on the roof with nowhere to go. The water will find cracks and come in through the exterior roof coverings, which seep into the attic. I wish it stopped there, but there is the chance that it can flow into the exterior walls or through the ceiling insulation, which will stain the ceiling finish.

Nonuniform Rood Surface Temperatures

The primary source that causes ice dams is the source of heat/energy that melts certain frozen areas on the roof. When certain spots on the sloped roof melt, there is a heat source on the inner side. There are three ways that the ice on the slope can melt:

Conduction is when the heat/energy travels through a solid, insulation, and roof structure.

Convection is when heat/energy is transferred from rising air to your hand, roof.

Finally, heat/energy can be transmitted by electromagnetic waves known as radiation.

To avoid a heating source from being created, you should ensure that all access points to the attic are well-sealed so no heat escapes through the ceiling. These are just a few ways to be proactive in preventing ice dams from forming.

Limiting the Heating Source by Adding Insulation

One way to eliminate the possibility of having access to heat/energy from escaping your home is by installing more insulation. When installing insulation, you should find one with a high R-value per inch to ensure all heat stays in the house.

Purchasing A Roof Rake

If you cannot install more insulation, you could always hire SERVPRO but purchase a roof rake. This tool can help pull down access snow to help minimize the source of the water damage.

Winter Weather Brings Dangerous Conditions

1/4/2022 (Permalink)

Person walking up the side of mountain. When being exposed to the elements, you must wear multiple layers!

Isn’t it crazy how it can go from the 60s in December to 30 below in January?

Yah. If you have been avoiding the cold, you might have noticed it’s become a real struggle in the past week or so. With the temperatures dipping lower the more you have to worry about protecting yourself from the blustery winter weather. One of the biggest concerns is when being exposed and getting frostbite... Or frost nipped... Wait, what is the difference?

Frostnip

Frostnip is a mild form of frostbite which requires immediate action of reheating the skin. If you let frostnip untreated, it could worsen to the point of numbness in the affected area. When the skin gets reheated, expect to feel this tingling pain caused by the blood flowing throughout this area once again.

Frostbite

Most of the time, frostbite goes unnoticed because of the lack of feeling in the affected area. Most of the time, someone points out frostbite, and the best course of action is immediately to seek medical assistance before it worsens. There are two stages of frostbite, superficial and deep, which require immediate action for preventable measures.

Superficial Frostbite

Superficial frostbite can discolor the skin tone to a dark blue or black shade if treated by reheating the skin, which should be done immediately upon notice. When the skin is reheated, you should know that it can look mottled with the chance of having stinging, burning, or swelling pain. It is also possible that once the skin is heated that a liquid blister could form between 12-36 hours after reheating.

Deep Frostbite

This form of frostbite is the most severe as it affects all layers of skin and tissue in the affected area. A good indicator of deep frostbite is discoloring of the skin, with the primary symptom being losing all sensation of cold, pain, or discomfort in the area. Large blisters should be expected to form 24 to 48 hours after rewarming. The biggest concern is the possibility of having the joints and muscles stop working, which leads to the area turning black and hard as it dies.

Knowing What To Look For

If you notice any of these symptoms, you should seek medical attention immediately.

  • Increased pain, swelling, inflammation in the affected area.
  • Fever.
  • The skin is hard, cold, or blotchy.
  • In severe cases, the risk of developing hypothermia with the symptoms being intense shivering, slurred speech, drowsiness, and the loss of coordination.

We at SERVPRO of Marshall, Columbia, and Sedalia want you to have a safe winter season. If you are spending some time out in the winter elements, be aware of when to return to safety.

Massive Storm Front Causes Major Damage in Multiple States

12/13/2021 (Permalink)

Tornado ripping through the countryside causing damage Don't Let a Tornado Ruin your Holiday Season. Follow these tips, and you will be good in no time!

Last Friday, a massive storm front wreaked havoc as it created perfect conditions for tornadoes to touchdown killing two here in Missouri. Tornadoes that swapped homes off their entire foundation left behind a line of destruction. This blog will discuss what you should do if you are trying to make a damage claim due to a storm or tornado.

  • Step 1: Standing Out From the Rest
    • It might be hard to get your claim completed when dealing with a massive storm that leaves behind damage in multi states.
      • Trying to get your claim completed from a natural disaster might be more demanding since it wasn't an isolated event. Everyone will be trying to get in touch with their insurance provider to restore their property to the preloss condition.
  • Step 2: Document EVERYTHING!
    • When having conversations with anyone new, it will be beneficial to write down what was discussed.
      • This is important because you get the information to complete the insurance claim. This also helps make yourself look creditable since your not wasting anyone's time.
      • We recommend that you write down any gathered contacts and their number and any documentation discussed. This helps push your claim along because you're proactive about listening to what you have to complete.
  • Step 3: CALL SERVPRO!
    • Our team of professionals will compile a folder of documentation, communication logs, and other critical information that benefits the insurance adjuster.
      • Using our Proprietary website, our Project Managers can use an equation that maps out where each piece of equipment should be placed.
      • SERVPRO is your one-stop-shop as we offer reconstruction services so that we can finish your project thoroughly. Instead of passing the work off to another company, we can hire subcontractors to complete your reconstruction needs.

Categories of Contaminated Water

12/13/2021 (Permalink)

Town affected by wide spread flood water. Widespread flooding can create contamination problems which bring harmful conditions.

Sometimes we will call about a job that isn’t the most desirable, but we will never turn it down. A job site affected by a sewage leak or flooding can carry harmful bacteria that comes in contact with or is ingested can cause severe discomfort. When going into an area affected by a contaminated source, we will have our crew wear the complete PPE to secure their health and safety.

Categories of Contaminated Water

Category 1: “Clean Water”

This category is when a leak comes from a clean source from a broken water pipe. A toilet containing no urine or feces is considered a category one since it has no harmful pathogens. Category one floods will escalate to category 2 or 3 if it doesn’t get mitigated.

Category 2: “Gray Water”

In this category, you are looking for the possibility of contamination from a water source containing some degree of contamination. When gray water gets ingested, it can create some discomfort due to the ingestion of harmful bacteria.

Category 3: “Black Water”

Water contaminated by an unclean source will be considered category three because it has been affected by a source that has harmful pathogens. The difference between category 2 is that when category three gets ingested, it can create severe pain with the possibility of death due to these harmful pathogens. We will never suggest that our clients should put themselves in contact with this category for that reason. Flood water is an excellent example of this category because you cannot know where the source came from, such as a pipe, river, or sewage from an unclean source.

Someone P.A.S.S the Fire Extinguisher

12/13/2021 (Permalink)

Fire extinguisher hanging on the wall Notice how this fire extinguisher is easy to locate, which makes putting out a fire easier when it's easy to identify.

As a business owner, your employees look for guidance and help. You train your employees for their role in your company, but you should also teach them the company's expectations of understanding protocols. A business should teach their employees things like fire safety and how to use a fire extinguisher.

Let's say a fire breaks out in the staff kitchen due to someone forgetting their lunch was in the microwave. When a fire breaks out, what should you do? What are the steps to working a fire extinguisher? Follow these four simple steps to use a fire extinguisher if you don't know.

  1. Pull the pin. This will break the tamper seal as well.
  2. Aim low; you will want to point the extinguisher nozzle at the base of the fire.
  3. Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.
  4. Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire until it appears to be out.

By following the P.A.S.S. method, you can guarantee that your business and employees are safe. Implementing training over how to use extinguisher equipment can ensure your employees can take action to get what needs to get done if a problem arises.

Don't Ignite Your Property

12/13/2021 (Permalink)

People smoking at the dinner table. By going outside to smoke you are ensuring that you will keep your property and family safe from a potential fire.

Although it isn’t recommended, people will smoke cigarettes inside their homes, which always puts the owner at risk of a fire. In this blog, we will be going over how a simple cigarette has caused significant damage to our client’s property.

  • Overloaded Ashtray
    • Typically, smokers will often sit the cigarette on the ashtray to complete whatever they are doing. This becomes a bigger problem for those who don’t clean out the ashtray, causing a backup of ash in the dish. When the cigarette sits on the ashtray, the butt can have hot ash ignite the plate on fire.
  • Falling Asleep While Smoking
    • In the United States, one in twenty (5%) of home fires are started when the person falls asleep with an ignited cigarette in their hands. This is dangerous because a fire could start next to sleeping, causing severe burns or death.
  • Putting Out the Cigarette
    • When discarding a cigarette butt, you will want to ensure that it is fully put out before discarding it. What seems to happen a lot is when the smoker throws out the ignited butt, which could catch the bushes on fire the escalate to the entire home.

A simple way to ensure the safety of your home when smoking is by going outside to smoke. This is easier said in the summertime, but you can keep your property safe from a potential fire by smoking outside.

"3… 2… 1… Happy New Year"

12/13/2021 (Permalink)

Couple Sitting together Enjoying the Firework Show A couple is enjoying the firework with no fear of a fire starting!

Everyone screams as the ball drop before the fireworks go off as pure excitement fills the air. With so many people wanting to be around their loved ones during this particular time, a fire would be the hiccup in that plan.

Please be Responsible!

It's midnight, and you just got done kissing your special someone as the clocks strike midnight and as the fireworks start exploding in the air. Your SERVPRO professionals are here to remind you of the supervisor's responsibilities.

Be Cautious About Smoke From Fireworks

When people shoot off many fireworks, the ground can collect a large amount of smoke. People with preexisting conditions can feel the effects of this, so when finding the launchpad site, you should think about where you want these people to sit. The perfect location would be upwind, where the smoke won't travel because the fine particles and gases left behind are hard on the lungs.

Storing Unused Fireworks

Often, people will save some of their fireworks, and that's okay when it's in a controlled environment. The problem arises when they aren't properly stored, and the fireworks ignite inside the home. Finding the perfect location can ensure that your home is safe all year around.

From your SERVPRO, we want to wish you a Happy New Year!

Prioritizing the Response

11/25/2021 (Permalink)

Boxes After you decide what you are keeping, we will hold onto it until it's ready to be picked up.

Every job site we go on, we see the devastation that is caused by uncontrollable accidents. How do you organize a job site where you want to be conscious that this is the client's home and everything has particular importance or meaning in their lives? We place affected items into three potential actions. Each action has its own set of pot entail deviations and considerations. This helps ensure we efficiently use the time to get the contents back and return to the preloss state faster.

Discard

There will be times when no amount of time or effort could go into the restoration of an item that could get it back to the preloss state. This is due to irreversible damage caused by the contact of moisture, contamination, or physical damage. Many items fitting this description should be listed on a schedule of loss, set aside for review by an adjuster, and, if approved, discarded and replaced. Exceptions can occur when an item's emotional or monetary value and the client decide to overlook the damage and accept the item in a less than preloss condition.

Restore Immediately

We encourage the client to talk to involved parties such as insurers or adjusters. We will take immediate action when dealing with items highly susceptible to secondary damage. Articles needing to be restored immediately play a significant role in increasing or decreasing the overall loss severity. The value of the item significantly influences a decision to repair, and photo documentation can help determine the value of these items.

Restore Later

Materials that suffered minor but repairable damage should be low on the priority list. These items face little risk of secondary damage since they weren't wet or suffered from short-term exposure to water. Do not spend time and energy in the first moments of mitigation time on these items.

Knowing where your contents belong in these categories will help ensure you spend your time on items with a more significant amount of meaning.

Winter Weather Brings Winter Damage to Your Home

11/15/2021 (Permalink)

Protect your home from winter weather Winter storms can create winter disasters for your home.

As the songs would like you to think, "It's the most wonderful time of the year." Little did they tell you the winter storms can bring extensive damage to your home. No matter the disaster, you should know that SERVPRO can help fix anything Jack Frost can throw at you.

Wind + Frozen Branches = Massive headache

Everyone will say that walking in a winter wonderland is pleasant and relaxing. That's true, but they can also be a headache when frozen branches break off and fall on your home. I'm not sure if you know this, but here at SERVPRO, we can handle any reconstruction projects. No matter if your entire roof needs repair or if you want new windows installed to help keep your warm temperatures inside, we are your one-stop shop.

Melted Frosty + Flooded Basement = Water Damage

Your kids might love to lay in it, and your dogs might like to eat it. We can all say that we want snow for different reasons. Slush can create a significant mess, but that is the least of your worries. When snow and ice freeze next to your foundation, it can create tiny cracks that can have water seep through. Often the water will leak down into the basement, but the problem begins when the warm temperatures make favorable conditions for mold to grow.

These are two examples of ways the winter weather can create more significant problems than a slushy dog trail. Staying on top of your home's maintenance will ensure that a bigger disaster isn't waiting to make an appearance.

Melting Snow Creates Water Damage

11/15/2021 (Permalink)

Winter Weather Brings Winter Damage The winter storms create water damage but following our listed tips it can ensure that your being safe this winter.

Being in the Midwest, we can all agree that it can be snowstorms one day, and the next, it will be direct sunlight. People often won’t associate snow melting with flooding issues as it isn’t as expected when the ice freezes near the structure, creating tiny cracks in the foundation. When the temperature rises in one of our weather mood swings, water can seep through these cracks.

Water Damage to the Carpets

Water the comes through these cracks can become problematic when the water into the drywall, hardwood floors, or carpets. It becomes dangerous when the water gets the carpet wet and when you combine that with the usually warm temperatures of the home, it can promote mold growth. The growth will thrive as many homeowners don’t allow ventilation outwards, but if you follow these tips, you can’t enjoy the snow with comfort.

Tip 1: Be Strategic with Shoveling

If your home is on a hill, you might want to be strategic when it comes to the flow of water that will be created when the snow melts. You will want to create a path that will allow the water to flow away from home.

Tip 2: Clear Excessive Snow off of the Roof

By not clearing the snow off of the roof, you are allowing the possibility of a room collapse that could create a more significant accident if the top were to cave in. When you are up on the roof, you might want to check the drains and clear out any frozen blockage. If you let the backup continue, you might put yourself into a situation of creating an ice dam.

Tip 3: Check Sump Pump

Testing the sump pump by pouring a bucket of water can show you that it is currently working. You must check the pump because it will help prevent flooding of the crawlspaces, around the foundation, and in the basement.

Don’t let the winter season bring you stress, so follow these tips and ensure that flooding won’t be in your holiday forecast.

Removing Moisture from Materials

11/15/2021 (Permalink)

Hardwood floor water leak Materials can hold moisture in different ways.

When looking at a project that involves water damage, we look at two factors: the type of material and the degree of wetness. We look at the variation of each material's permeability or the ability for water to pass through the material. The degree of wetness refers to the moisture movement by indicating the type of water being addressed. The liquids will be presented in one, two, or three forms.

Surface Water

Surface water can be found on the material's surface, making it a liquid, visible, and evaporates. When cleaning this type of water, it's essential to remove the moisture physically by using mechanical extraction equipment. By using different airflows which moderate temperature and humidity will evaporate the remaining water.

Free Water

Free water can be found within a material, but it hasn't bonded to the chemical bonds of the material. The moisture will be located in cavities, open pores, and other air spaces within these materials. Free water is a liquid that can generally be seen when the material is darkened, and this liquid can be evaporated. When extracting this type of water, you will have to use lower humidities and warmer temperatures. Monitoring these factors help maintain the rate of evaporation which ensures the liquid can evaporate.

Bound Water

Bounded water is a little more problematic as it is absorbed by the material and gets held by the chemical bonds. Due to the chemical bond holding in the moisture, you will have to release it before it can evaporate. Unlike the other types, controlling the airflow onto the material won't be successful. The fabric will successfully dry fastest when it is warmed, and it's essential to keep the surrounding humidity very low. Due to the chemical bonding, this type of absorption takes the longest out of the other.

The knowledge on what to look for is what separates SERVPRO from our competitors. Our Project Managers will go to a water-damaged job site and will be able to know what to look for to ensure that they will send our technicians with the right equipment to get the job done.

Don’t stress, This is How to Handle Water Damage.

11/15/2021 (Permalink)

How to Approach Unwanted Water Taking these steps will help ensure you don't have to worry about water damage to your home.

Okay, close your eyes. Imagine you are getting home from a long day at work, and you are going downstairs to grab a bag of chicken nuggets that your screaming kiddo wants for dinner. You are already one hay straw away from having a total meltdown. As you step off the bottom step and into standing water up to your ankles. This is when you shouldn’t stress because SERVPRO is here to help you.

Step 1: Call Your Insurance Agent

This is important as this is what will get the ball rolling. When you call your agent, you will tell them you have a claim to call in.

Step 2: Find the Source

A lot of times, people will associate a leak with heavy rain or storms. Here are a few other ways that you can have a flood in your home:

  1. Broken pipe
  2. Pipe burst due to cold weather
  3. Overflowing toilet or sink
  4. Crack in the foundation

Once you find the source, you can be able to provide essential information for our team. If you are part of our Emergency Ready Profile app, you will be able to pull up critical information about where you can locate the water shut-offs.

Step 3: Call us at SERVPRO; we got you!

After calling one of our 24/7 call representatives, they will have someone there as soon as possible. Our Project Manager will look at the current state of the accident and provide clear information to our technicians on how they should go about remediation. Some of the information they will tell their staff is how many air movers, dehumidifiers, or shop vacs will be needed for the job with a precise location on where it should be sat.

Step 4: Reconstruction?

Depending on the state of the emergency, you might need someone to come in and provide reconstruction services. Don’t worry; we still have your back. We can take on reconstruction services and specialized subcontractors to help complete any jobs from beginning to end.

These are just a few steps you should take when dealing with water damage. What we strive for is a complete destress for our clients. We want to take on the project to ensure that you can have one thing taken off of your plate.

How to STOP Mold Before it Starts

11/15/2021 (Permalink)

Always Check your Attic During the Winter Months To ensure condensation doesn't grow mold in your home, follow these tips to prevent mold growth.

Due to the cold temperatures outside, most people will keep their homes at a higher temperature. The problem with this is that condensation can occur when the warm air from inside and the cold air come down upon the roof. This is more common in homes with poor insulation between the roof and the ceiling and the outer and inner walls. By preventing condensation helps to avoid mold from developing in your homes.

Snow melting is another contributor in homes with roof, basement, or foundations issues or homes with deep snow that lays against the house and seeps through small areas of unprotected exterior walls. By following these simple tips, you can avoid any unwanted mold growth.

Tip 1: Turn Ceiling fans to Reverse

When you run the fan in reverse, you change the airflow driving it upward instead of downward. This ensures that warm air circulation is created up by the ceiling, promoting the drying of any moisture in the air. The warm air will then flow down the walls, and this sometimes helps by drying the surfaces, which evaporates water from these surfaces. You will want to keep this method going, especially at night as the temperatures drop, even more, creating perfect mold development situations.

Tip 2: Check the Humidity and Condensation in the Attic

The length of snow that stays on your roof is a lot longer than a rainstorm in the summer. It is quite possible that when the snow melts on the roof, it could create dams. What you will want to do is that check to see if you see any insulation exposed. If you notice any insulation, you will want to call your trusted team at SERVPRO to help fix the problem before it grows.

The winter brings a lot of unseen problems that are hard to remember. Here at SERVPRO, we know what to look for to ensure you don’t let a bad situation worsen.

Spray Paint Doesn't Stand A Chance.

11/15/2021 (Permalink)

The destruction of one's businesses is something that we don't want to see. You put endless hours into it to ensure that it's going to be a huge success. When someone does something that damages that pride of joy, you might feel at a loss. Don't sweat it; SERVPRO has Soda Blasting equipment to help clear off any unwanted destruction to the exterior.

Granite is a fine rock that we use to blast char or staining off of materials regarding graffiti. We have two systems that we use, wet and dry, so our Project Manager will look at what route they should take.

Wet System

This system is used in areas that strong abrasive power is required. The product we use is environmentally friendly but still requires some form of cleanup. We can use this product both wet or dry when performing work outside.

Dry System

The dry system is used when the job is inside the business. We use this method when we don't want to get other materials wet.

How it Works

When soda blasting, we have our technicians use full PPE as they will encounter dust particles. We place the area under negative pressure to help eliminate any dust particles that become air-born. An air scrubber will duct the unit out of a window, so the airborne particles have a way to escape. This is followed up with a very detailed cleaning after the work area has been completed.

All vents and returns are covered to isolate the room from the HVAC systems, which may require a duct cleaning after the work is completed. By doing this, we are ensuring that none of the fine dust particles spread throughout the facility. Some areas may require shellac after the blasting is complete, but this isn't always the case.

Heating Alternatives

11/11/2021 (Permalink)

Space heater on the ground Place the space heater on the floor to ensure proper use.

In Iowa, Mid-American Energy Co. has made a statement to its customers that they should expect their heating bills for natural gas to rise 46% to 96% over last year due to the rising has costs. Consumers who use propane for their heating source should expect their heating cost to rise 69% over the previous year. Consumers might feel the need to find heating alternatives such as space heaters.

Dangers of Space Heaters

The Consumer Product Safety Commission stated that space heaters are the leading cause of a thousand house fires each year. Space heaters will be used as a heating alternative, but you must be using them correctly. By following these tips, you will ensure not putting yourself at risk of a house fire.

  • Keep space heater on the floor:

We get it; during a middle of a snowstorm, you might want to feel an overwhelming amount of warmth. When trying to save some money, you might want to move your space heater onto a counter next to you. Moving heaters isn’t wise because you might get the temperature of the counter to an unsafe level. Would you mind refraining from moving the heaters in this manner by keeping them on the ground, free from any flammable fabrics/items?

  • Keep away from water:

Hopefully, we all know that water and electricity don’t go together, and this is the case with water and space heaters. Keep in mind the placement location as kitchens and bathrooms aren’t suitable places for space heaters.

  • Plug directly into the wall:

Many space heater fires start when the consumer plugs in onto an extension cord. Cords aren’t the best decision because people will try and cover the cord with a rug. When you add an extension cord into the mix, you add extra electrical connections, increasing your chance of creating resistances. When you create a more significant resistance, the more energy, heat, and the rug you placed over to cover up the cord is now getting heated. It’s when that rug gets to an unsafe heat level that it becomes a problem. When plugging the space heater directly into the wall, you will want to do 3 feet away check. Make sure that nothing flammable is in that 3-foot radius that could catch fire.

With the projected increase in heating sources, we understand the appeal of having space heaters. These are great alternatives when you use them properly, so make sure you follow these big tips to ensure you have a safe, warm winter season.

Dryer Fire Prevention

11/11/2021 (Permalink)

Man putting clothes in dryer It is critical when doing laundry that you are not overfilling the machines.

It doesn’t matter if you love washing your clothes or you despise it doing laundry is a task. You have to organize, clean, dry, and fold/ hang up. Just for the following day to come, you encounter the “what do I wear” question, followed by you throwing different options on your bed. See, laundry is a task, but did you know that washers and dryers cause about 16,000 house fires each year—however, 31% of the leading causes are the failure to clean and perform routine maintenance.

Causes of Dryer Fires

  • Mechanical and Electrical Failure:

These types of fires aren’t as common as the others. To prevent these types of fires, you should check to ensure all parts are working correctly. This tip is critical, so you know if the machine needs to have any maintenance done.

  • Improper Use:

When you are in a jam and think the current load can fit one or two more sweaters, you’re causing the machine to work harder. Another thing to keep in mind is the type of material that you are putting into the dryer. Some materials that aren’t suited for high temperatures are plastic, rubber, or foam, which can heat and melt, leading to a fire.

  • Dirty lint filters and vents

One of the leading causes of dryer fires are clogged vents, ducts, and filters. These filters can collect an excessive amount of dirt, grass, or other material left from the washer. Another critical thing to keep in mind is checking the outside vent, which prevents any birds, insects, or rodents from nesting and causing issues.

Laundry might seem like an endless task, but following these simple steps can ensure that you aren’t creating perfect conditions for a dryer fire.

Winter Fire Prevention Checklist

11/11/2021 (Permalink)

Did you complete the list? It's the time of year where you start to use your heater more often, have you completed the list?

Did you complete your winter checklist?

As temperatures start reflecting the winter season, we wanted to provide you with some tips on ensuring you are winter fire prevention ready. Whether you are having a real Christmas tree or an artificial one, we will prepare you to step into the winter season on the right foot.

  • Turning off the space heater

As utility bills are estimated to rise significantly this year due to the increase in gas prices, many people will be purchasing space heaters as a heating alternative. To be space heater ready, feel free to read our space heater blog. To ensure that you are using the space heater correctly, make sure that you turn off the space heater when you leave a room unattended.

  • Cutting the bottom of Christmas Tree

As many people prepare for the tradition of having a real tree, many don’t understand the importance of setting it up. As soon as you bring in an outdoor tree, you will begin to notice it will dry out. A dry tree is problematic as the pine needles will become as flammable as a cotton drape. When setting up your tree, you will want to cut 4 inches off the base to ensure the water is absorbed. A hydrated tree will prevent the tree from drying out and making it more of a fire hazard.

  • Blowing out candles

People tend to be in their homes more in the winter months than in the summer months. With it getting darker out sooner and the overall wanting your space to smell like your favorite seasonal scents, people are at a higher risk of forgetting to blow out their candles. Forgetting to blow out a candle is a quick way to have a fire situation as there are so many factors that you can’t control. Pets, specifically cats, are the most significantly unpredictable as their fur can go up in flames fast. Pets also have the chance to knock down candles which would engulf the floor into a fire. When lighting candles, you will want to ensure that nothing flammable is within three feet of the candle.

  • Getting your chimney cleaned

You know that chimney you probably haven’t touched since last winter? Well, if you haven’t scheduled someone to come clean it, this might be your reminder. When people don’t clean it out properly, it has a buildup of toxic gases that can pollute the air in your home.

By implementing these tips, you are ensuring that you are proactive about fire safety during the winter months. Don’t let an uh oh turn into something bigger and more stressful for your holiday season.

Emergency Ready Profiles (ERPs)

11/5/2021 (Permalink)

ERP right there on your phone The ERP program allows you to have complete access to the information you need to know about your home or business.

November indicates the time of year in which temperatures start to drop and winter is just around the corner. As a home or business owner, the thought of colder temperatures also brings concerns such as furnace malfunctions and frozen pipes.  We do not wish for any of these things to happen, but if they do, we want you to be prepared.

Emergency Ready Profiles (ERPs) are a helpful tool in locating and documenting where all the shut-offs are in your home or business, as well as having a list of all emergency contacts in the event of a disaster. The profile can be accessed via a mobile app or PC, and inside the app or website, is the ability to contact us directly for fast response.

While these profiles do not reduce the chance of a disaster happening, they can help reduce the amount of damage that occurs. Being able to find the shut-off valve quickly can help stop running water from causing damage to the home/business or cut electricity to prevent further safety hazards.

Minimizing the amount of damage can lessen the stress during the claim or reconstruction process and help us take less time in mitigating the damage to return the home back to its former glory.

Mold Exposure from Flash Floods

6/29/2021 (Permalink)

Increased flooding in Mid-Missouri has caused longer wait times for restoration companies. But experts say people who have flood damage in their homes shouldn't wait to take steps against mold.

Ann Hisle with SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia said mold can form in as little as 48 hours. Flooded areas inside homes should be dried as quickly as possible to reduce mold buildup. SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia had 150 flood cleanup calls over the weekend.

"If you have things that are properly dried out on a water damage loss, the chances of mold are very slim," Hisle said.

Hisle said drywall is like a sponge and can cause mold to grow up the wall. So if you are experiencing any of these issues then call on the professionals to help you get your property back to normal.

"Clean-up professionals say to leave big debris to experts"

6/22/2021 (Permalink)

Residents and business owners across the midwest are still cleaning up after strong overnight winds peaked at over 60 miles per hour, causing widespread storm damage. This storm damage can cause subsequent water and mold damage.

John Jasper with our SERVPRO of Columbia team says fixing up the building could take from one to six months. He says having us professionals handle the clean-up of things like major holes in your roof or walls or live wires is much safer than trying to do it yourself.

Jasper says if your home gets hit hard by severe storms like we saw Sunday night, your insurance coverage could put you up in a hotel depending on your coverage so it's always a good idea to keep an eye out for that in your insurance policy.

Laundry Safety

3/12/2021 (Permalink)

Dryer Laundry can easily pile up, but it is essential to practice basic safety techniques to protect your home.

Not clearing your filter after each use can be dangerous. It is reported that there are over 17,000 fires related to home dryers each year.
Here are a few simple tips to follow to help prevent a clothes dryer fire.
-Clean the filter screen after each load to prevent lint buildup.
-An adult should be at home whenever the dryer is in use and the home should have working smoke alarms.
-Clean the vents outside twice a year to clean out any accumulated dust and lint.
-Commercial dryers should be cleaned out regularly because of their frequent use and shared venting system.
-Don't dry mop heads in the dryer. The dryer's heat can ignite the chemical residue on mop heads.
-Keep the surrounding area clean. The dryer's heat may ignite anything left too close to the dryer.
-The safety of your family is important to us and we hope that you don't encounter such a fire. Be sure you follow these steps to avoid a fire in your home.

Smoke Webs Smoke webs appeared in this apartment complex after a fire caught in the lower level. The fire damage caused smoke and soot damage in the complex.

In the case of a fire, there can be a situation called smoke webbing. Ionization refers to particles of smoke with opposite charges attracting to each other. The formations of these smoke chains are called "smoke webs" as stated previously. These smoke webs look similar cobwebs. They are usually found at room corners and other parts of the home. The presence of smoke webs indicates combustion of synthetic materials, not spiders or cobwebs as some believe. In every fire, some surfaces can be become deeply embedded with soot and smoke odors. Ionization is one of the factors that influences smoke behavior. And understanding these factors help our team of professionals remove any damage appropriately. If you experience a fire in your home or business, you can call on our team of professionals to properly take care of your fire damage, smoke, and soot.

5 Ways to Protect Your Home

1/4/2021 (Permalink)

Water in a room These 5 tips to help prevent storm damage to your home or business. Call on our team if you need help during a disaster.

  1. Clean the gutters as clogged and damaged gutters are what often what lead to roof leaks and foundation leaks. When your gutters are full of leaves and debris it prevents the water from draining down the down spout and away from the structure causing water to pool on the roof and around the foundation.
  1. Check your foundation. If you have cracks or large gaps in your foundation water could seep into your home or business during a heavy rainstorm causing water damage, water will find any source inside it can.  Also check the grading around the property and make sure that the grade naturally drains the water away from the structure.
  1. Pack up all outdoor furniture and other light items. Often times outdoor furniture is made from light weight materials and in a strong wind guest can rip it up into the air and launch it into your or others home, business or vehicles causing significant damage.
  1. Know how to shut off your utilities. If storm damage happens you may need to shut off the utilities. It’s a good practice to locate all utility shut offs and know how they work before a storm hits. Make sure all parties that are on the property know where these items are and how to properly turn them off.
  1. Inspect your property for dead or damaged trees. In a storm trees can get knocked down or limbs are torn off. Call a licensed arborist for help with this inspection and solving the issue safely.

Winter Is Here!

12/31/2020 (Permalink)

a wet floor Here at SERVPRO, we want to be sure that you are prepared for any disaster that could come your way. If you ever experience a disaster, call our team.

Winter is upon us! With that comes the cold temps and the freezing pipes. Keep the faucets dripping to keep some water traveling through, making it harder to freeze, but there are other ways to prevent freezing or bursting pipes!

Keeping the pipes insulated is essential! If getting proper insulation is impossible before a storm, then wadding up newspaper and duct tape can provide temporary insulation around pipes. If the water pipes are in the garage, then keep the garage door closed whenever possible, to prevent freezing air from getting in and dropping the temps even further. Maintaining a consistent temperature in the home will also help, as well as, keeping the heat on when leaving the home for any extended period of time.

These are just a few ways to prevent freezing pipes, but if there is ever a surprise pipe burst, SERVPRO is there to help with mitigating the water and getting your home back to the way it was before, "Like it never even happened."

The Most Devastating Experience

Property owners experiences a flood of emotions when a fire ravages their home or business.  Fear, uncertainty, stress and doubt about the future of the property and their livelihood can be overwhelming long after the fire has been extinguished and the smoke has cleared.

LOOK – LISTEN – LEARN

  1. Look for places a fire could start. Take a good look around your home and identify potential fire hazards.
  2. Listen for the sound of a smoke alarm. You only have minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds.  Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from home or business which everyone knows where it is.
  3. Learn 2 ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading to the outside open easily and are free of clutter.

Every Second Counts

  1. Consider escape ladders for sleeping area on the second and third floors. Only purchase collapsible escape ladders evaluated by a recognized testing laboratory.
  2. Teach children how to escape on their own in case you cannot help them. Plan for everyone for everyone in your home or business, with special considerations for elderly or disabled individuals.
  3. Practice your fire escape plan during the day and at nigh time.

Fires are Preventable

  1. Immediately shut-off, then professionally replace, light switches that are hot to touch and lights that flicker.
  2. Frayed wires can cause fires. Replace all worn, old or damage appliance cords immediately and do not run cords under rugs or furniture.
  3. Never force a 3-slot prong plug into a 2-slot outlet or extension cord by breaking off the 3rd prong to make it fit into a 2-prong outlet or extension cord.
  4. Inspect and clean woodstove pipe and chimneys annually and check monthly for damage or obstructions.
  5. Make sure fire is completely out in a fireplace before leaving the house or going to bed.

BEST HELPFUL HINTS TO GET YOU THROUGH THE WINTER AND STORMS

12/15/2020 (Permalink)

ice The days are getting colder and it's time to get ready for the potential of winter storms. If the cold weather gets out of hand, then call our team.

  1. Ceiling fans are not just for summer: flip the switch to reverse the spin of the fan and turn on the lowest speed to blow warm air down from ceiling.
  2. Use energy from the Sun: During the day, open drapes and blinds to allow sunlight to help warm the house, land then close at night to hold in heat.
  3. Dress in Layers: Pack an extra pair of warm socks, blankets, wool sweaters and long-johns or coveralls in your car to keep warm.
  4. Keep a bag of clay kitty litter in car: If your car gets stuck in deep snow or slick ice, sprinkle kitty litter (non-clumping) at the base of your tires to add some traction to get moving again. Extra weigh in trunk will create added pressure on your tires, ensuring greater contact between your tread and the ground.
  5. Don’t smoke or drink coffee before shoveling: Caffeine and nicotine are stimulants and can add extra stress to the heart.
  6. Learn to walk like a penguin: To walk safely on ice, walk like a penguin. Point your feet out, land hold your arms out slightly to your side.  Shuffle, land take short steps.
  7. Easy deicer: The night before freezing temperatures, rub half a potato over your car’s windshield.  The sugar from the potato creates a barrier over the window and prevents ice from forming, when you come out in the morning you will not have to scrape!  Simply rinse and wipe with your wipers when you get on the road.
  8. Gas Up: During cold weather months, it is good practice to keep at least a half tank of gas in your vehicle at all times.  Not only does it prevent you from being stranded, but it prevents any water in the tank from freezing, which can damage the fuel pump.
  9. Frozen locks: Squirt a little hand sanitizer on them. The isopropyl alcohol that kills germs also lowers the freezing point of water, and can melt the ice inside the lock within seconds.
  10. Grab a roll of duct tape and keep it in car: Not only does it fix everything, but you can use it as a fire starter – duct tape is very flammable and is a great tool to get a fire going in an emergency.  Don’t forget to have a lighter or matches in your emergency kit.
  11. Candles: will keep you warm in your car if you are stranded in car. Also, don’t forget to have a lighter or matches.
  12. No more icy walkways: Sprinkle leftover coffee grounds on your freshly shoveled walk or driveway to help melt the ice – it’s a natural and environmentally friendly way to add more traction underfoot.  Remember to wipe feet when going inside.
  13. Dry wet shoes: by stuffing them with dry newspaper to absorb the moisture quicker.
  14. Shoveling Snow: Spay shovel with non-cook cooking spray, snow will slide off easier.
  15. Winter Survival Kit to keep in vehicle: Flashlight, batteries, snacks, water, ice scraper, first aid kit, candle and lighter, phone charger, warm outer clothing and travel shovel.

Winter Checklist for Your Home

11/20/2020 (Permalink)

Snow Flake The winter months are quickly approaching, so if you experience any damages from snow or ice, call our team to help.

WINTER CHECKLIST FOR YOUR HOME

Winter weather can wreak havoc on your home if you are not prepared. Here is a list of tips and tricks for the winter months.

WINDOWS & DOORS

*Replace weatherstripping around doors and windows to prevent heat loss.

*Make sure your windows are securely locked to prevent cold air coming in or heat loss.

*Inspect windows for cracks, gaps or broken glass.  Replace or repair if needed.

GUTTERS

*Clean out any debris to prevent blockage of water flow and make sure downspouts flow away from house to prevent flooding or foundation damage.

*Make sure gutters are properly fastened.  Ice and snow can pull gutters down and away from home.

*Cleaning out downspouts help with ice dams.

DRAINS

*Cover outside faucets with an insulated cover if not frost free.

*Unhook hoses and drain them before putting them away.

HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING

*Cover air conditioner with a protective cover.

*Replace air filter in furnace.

*Check duct work in attic and or basement for any leaks.

*Inspect Chimney flue for cracks, creosote and soot buildup before starting a fire.  Also, check damper to see if it is working properly and not rusted, or warped.  This could help avoid a fire hazard.

ROOF

*Check for deteriorating flashing around vent pipes, chimney and sky lights.  Seal or replace where water could seep in.

*Check for any roof damage which could create water damage from snow or ice melting on roof.

Helping Mother Nature

11/9/2020 (Permalink)

Techs in a kitchen Our professional team is Here to Help® when Mother Nature is too much to handle. We know how stressful these situations can be.

SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia are trained in the science of drying water damages using psychrometry. We follow industry-approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages.

Psychrometry is essential in restoring water damaged structure back to its preloss condition. So, what is psychrometry? It is the study of humidity, air flow, and temperature, and their effects on various materials or simply, the science of drying. It helps us determine what state-of-the-art equipment will be used.

When we arrive at the water damaged area in your home or business, we will:

  • Inspect the building to detect migration of water, damage to materials, and condition of building.
  • Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor the materials through the drying process.
  • Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.

Mother Nature can allow wet materials to dry in the correct conditions. However, nature can take too long and create secondary damages.

Call SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia to help speed up Mother Nature’s drying process with professional tools, equipment and knowledge.

Ways To Increase the Resale Value of a Property Through Restoration

10/9/2020 (Permalink)

Products and a vehicle in front of a home It is a fact: a clean, fresh smelling home sells faster, so that's why we are here to help realtors with difficult listings.

Customers might be concerned that undergoing damage and requiring restoration work might bring down the resale value of properties. These customers will want to know the relationship between restoration work and resale values of the properties.

Customers will be interested in learning what are some of the most cost-effective ways to raise the real estate value of their property. You can provide your insight as a leader in the restoration business to give your customers.

  1. Have your duct work cleaned out – It’s a good idea to start cleaning ducts before winter hits. This will help you out by ensuring that everyone in home stays healthy, but more so, they will also help you save money and to prolong the life of your duct system.
  1. Have your carpets cleaned – Brushing and vacuuming carpets, while being helpful, does not count as carpet cleaning. Vacuuming should be done twice a week to remove around 80% of the dirt and grime that accumulates in your carpets. Carpets should be professionally cleaned at least twice a year. Carpets cleaned professionally can remove the pathogens that hide within the fiber of your carpets. Allergens such as dust mites, bedbugs, and pollen can safely be extracted from the carpets.
  1. The potential dangers of removing mold yourself – We all are exposed to low levels of mold spores every day. However, molds can settle down and spread quickly through out your home. Exposure to certain molds can have effects on one's health. While DIYers sometimes attempt to tackle the problems in their home, mold is one that should be handled by a professional. Mold remediation requires the expertise of a professional with years of experience in safety and properly removing mold from your home.
  1. Odor Removal – Odors can be concerning when they linger and are tough to eliminate. Airing out the property and using air fresheners are masking agents. Lingering odors can indicate that there is serious damage that has been done to the property, such as water damage, mold growth, or smoke damage. Odors are usually an indicator of a larger issue. If you do not see it, but can smell it, then call your professional Restoration Company.

Protect Your Home From Water Damage

9/18/2020 (Permalink)

Two SERVPRO workers setting up drying equipment When you don't know what to do, call your local SERVPRO to help get you back to preloss conditions.

It’s 5pm, and you get home from a long day at work. You decide to go down to the basement to grab something from the freezer to make for supper. You get to the bottom and, smush, water everywhere!

What do you do? Say some choice words and think “Ugh, not today.”

In this case, call your insurance agent to let them know you have a claim to call in, then investigate where the water is coming from.

Water damage does not always come from a heavy rain or a storm. It can come from a broken pipe, an overflowing toilet or sink, a crack in the foundation where water may have been pooling. Once you know where the water is coming from, you can begin the steps to stop it and mitigate the damage.

If the water is indeed coming from a pipe or overflow, it is important to know where your water shutoff is in your home or business. Emergency Ready Profiles are available, and it’s a handy tool to know where it is and how to shut it off.

Once that is done, immediately call a restoration and cleaning company, like SERVPRO. Unless you have a water shop vac and a few air movers and dehumidifiers, it may take you awhile to clean it and we want to avoid mold at all costs. Mold growth can happen within days of the water damage, hence why mitigation is essential. The restoration company can do moisture readings and determine what is needed to dry the space, and get you back to where you were before the damage. They can also determine if any drywall or insulation will need to be replaced or removed to dry. This all happens while working with your insurance. Any reconstruction that may be needed will need to be done by a company that specializes in that but luckily, SERVPRO utilizes a company that can do those things.

It never hurts to do maintenance on any pipes or check on the water shut off, but in the case that something happens and you have water, those are some steps to take towards mitigation!

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

7/21/2020 (Permalink)

A fire alarm Be aware of your own fire alarms to ensure your own safety. If you do experience fire damage then you can call on our team to help.

Smoke alarms save lives. This statement is only true, if they are properly installed and maintained. According to Missouri Department of Public Safety, about 540 children (14 and under) die each year from home fires and 80 percent of those children did not have working smoke alarms in the home. What can you do keep your family safe?

Fire alarms should be kept:

  • Every Bedroom
  • Every level
  • Don’t forget basement and attic

Fire alarms should be tested:

  • Monthly by pressing the test button
  • Replace batteries every year (daylight saving time)
  • Replace unit every 10 years

Some additional tips include a fire escape plan which should have two exits. It is important to practice dire drills and interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the property to ensure safety. When fire and water damage take control of your life and home, SERVPRO® of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia will help you take it back. We are here to help our neighbors.

How To Remove Graffiti

7/14/2020 (Permalink)

Vandalism and graffiti can be very upsetting and overwhelming. Vandalism and graffiti can range from relatively minor pranks to malicious destruction of property. Often simple acts of vandalism, like breaking a window, can cause significant water and mold damage if not addressed in a timely manner. Here at SERVPRO of Marshall, Columbia, And Sedalia, we have the capability to help with this property damage. We offer vandalism removal as part of our many services. Our removal product is placed on a brush and rolled/painted on with some sort of applicator to the affected surface. The product is power-washed off to remove the paint after the necessary dwell time. As you can see, there are two layers of paint, so the process would be repeated to remove the other layer. We can do a board-up which is done after a storm, fire or vandalism incident where the building is exposed. It is meant to prevent further damage from happening to the facility.

The Do's and Do Not's for Fire Damage

7/2/2020 (Permalink)

two servpro employees demonstrating the use of a dry sponge to a woman We offer several options for cleaning smoke and soot to help you get back to preloss conditions. We want you to know that we are "Here to help."

If you have fire and smoke damage to your property, home or business, it is hard to not start cleaning yourself. If this situation arises, please let our SERVPRO franchise professionals assist you. Here are some tips for those who experience fire and smoke damage in their home or business. The Do's are meant to help you minimize damage. Please keep movement in the building at a minimum.  Minimal movement helps keep particles from becoming embedded in carpet and fabrics. Make sure to wash your hands a lot and be cautious not to transfer or wipe soot onto something. It can make it damage the item more. If electricity is off, then empty fridges and freezers and prop doors open to prevent odors. It is beneficial to change your furnace/air conditioner filter, but don't let the system continue to run. Be certain to turn it off. The Don'ts that are stated should be left to professionals to help you get back to preloss conditions. Do not try washing anything yourself. You could further rub the soot into the item. Don't shampoo your carpet. We recommend that you take the time to talk to a professional first. Don't clean any electronics without contacting a professional. Do not consume any food or beverages that may have been affected by the fire, soot, or smoke. Additionally, do not use toiletries as they can also be affected by fire, soot, or smoke. Do not turn ceiling fans on, because this will stir up the soot residue. Our SERVPRO team is available for 24-hour emergency services.

The Different Types of Mold You'll Encounter

7/2/2020 (Permalink)

Mold on a basement wall Mold prospers in warm, damp area and it will continue to spread with a continuous water source. Call our professionals to help with mold remediation.

There are different types of mold.  The most common are aspergillus, cladosporium and stachybotrys atra (also known as black mold). Aspergillus and Cladosporium are nontoxic to humans but it can aggravate allergy symptoms. It is important to note that not all mold is dangerous. In fact, it is all around us, but some mold should be removed by professionals. It is found in foods and in air conditioning systems. This is found as a black or green mold that grows in little dots in bathrooms, on painted surfaces, and in flexible air ducts. Black mold should be removed for safety reasons. Call our SERVPRO franchise professionals to remove molds such as black mold. This type of mold grows on building materials with a water source available. To prevent mold growth, make sure that water leaks are dried up quickly and humidity levels are maintained in your home or business. Mold thrives in warm, damp conditions. Our SERVPRO franchise professionals are certified to test for mold.  We do visual inspections, air sampling, as well as we have a bore scope that can go inside areas that are not normally visible to look for mold.  When air samples are taken, 3 samples are taken and sent in to be analyzed. The results take about 5 to 7 days to return.  If the air samples come back positive for mold then we will do further investigation to locate the source of the positive result of the air samples. Call us for pricing if you believe you have mold present and we will help you maintain your healthy home remediate mold.

The Do's and Do Not's for Water Damage

7/1/2020 (Permalink)

A truck filled next to air movers We are fully stocked for any amount of water damage. As franchise professionals, we can help you get toward preloss conditions.

Water damage can happen at any point for anyone, home or business, resulting in sometimes irreversible damaged property. These do's are only for clean water and do not’s pertain to sewage water. Sewage water is treated differently since it causes different damage and requires a different cleanup process. We, the team of SERVPRO of Marshall, Columbia, and Sedalia, know the importance of having professionals helping you properly dry out your home after water damage. With the right tools and pieces of equipment our SERVPRO franchise professionals can safely dry out your home or business and the contents within it. If the proper methods are administered then it minimizes the removal of materials such as drywall (this is also dependent on how soon the water damage is being dealt with. To minimize the damage, make sure to shut off the source of water and turn off the electricity. It is essential to remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and soaking up with towels. This is especially important for wood furniture. To ensure that more damage isn't sustained by the furniture, place aluminum foil in between furniture legs and the carpet. While these are good steps, your safety is important, so make sure to NOT enter a room with standing water since there could be a risk of electrical shock. We take safety very seriously and we want to ensure your safety along with our own. Make sure to disconnect all power first. It is recommended to NOT leave rugs and furniture upholstery wet against one another, because the fabrics have the potential to bleed between each other. It is important to note that you should not be utilizing your household vacuum to try and suck up any water. If these tips are followed, then damage can be minimized and you will be better prepared for help to arrive. Remember to stay safe and get excess water cleaned up professionally to minimize the chance of mold growth.

Building a kit for an emergency

5/20/2020 (Permalink)

an example emergency kit Re-think your needs every year and update your kit as your family’s needs change and make sure to replace expired food.

After an emergency, it may be necessary to build a kit that can last up to 3 days. We know how stressful unexpected storms can be and we want to help you prepare for any scenario.   To assemble your kit, store items in airtight plastic bags and put your entire disaster supplies kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins or a duffel bag. It should be noted that the supplies in a kit can be different based on your own personal needs, but the list recommended by ready.gov is a great place to start.

A basic emergency supply kit could include the following recommended items:

  • Water (one gallon per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation)
  • Food (at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food)
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit
  • Extra batteries
  • Whistle (to signal for help)
  • Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air)
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place)
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
  • Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)
  • Manual can opener (for food)
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery

You can use ready.gov for additional kit supplies ideas as well as how to maintain your kit and where to store it. Again, we want to help you prepare to weather any storm. If storm damage ever damages your home, you can call on SERVPRO of Marshall/Columbia/Sedalia to be there to help.

Do you Know How to Turn Off Your Water Supply?

1/28/2020 (Permalink)

We offer a no cost assessment of your facility and provide property details such as shut-off valve locations.

The amount of water that can leak from a 1/2-inch pipe is about 50 gallons per minute. If the pipe breaks and is left unattended for up to 12 hours, you could have up to 36,000 gallons of water damaging your business. To gain some perspective, a 20 X 40-foot pool (6 feet in depth) holds about 36,000 gallons of water.

Time is of the essence to shut off the water to your property. Review these helpful tips before water strikes:

  • Main shut off valves are usually located by the entrance of the water in the commercial building.
  • You will usually find a water meter box close to the street, as well.
  • If you are unable to locate your main water shut off, reach out to your local water department.
  • Once found, make it a point to let employees know the main shut off location(s).

It is always best to be prepared and SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia is here to help. We are here when the unthinkable water damage occurs and will get your business back to normal.

The Water You Don't See

1/16/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia is Here to Help take care of the water you don't see.

When you discover a water damage in your home or business, do you know where the water has traveled?

Water travels. It does not just stop on the surface where it is more obvious. It will travel from the carpet into the padding and make its way to the subfloor. Water can travel under the baseboard and climb the drywall. The drywall can soak up the water like a sponge.

This is why it is important to hire professionals to take care of your water emergency. SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia will inspect and test the premises to determine the extent of the damage and how far the moisture has traveled. Our team wants to ensure proper and complete restoration, so you can go back to your normal lifestyle.

Winter Ready Business

11/25/2019 (Permalink)

Get back to business quickly when winter strikes your property.

It may be hard to believe, but winter is right around the corner. In Mid-Missouri we can experience ice, cold winters with sleet, snow, ice, and damaging winds. We may not be able to control Mother Nature, but we can take action by getting the property winter ready with these precautions.

  • Check property for downed tree limbs and branches. Winter conditions could cause branches to fall causing damage to property or person injuries.
  • Inspect roofs, water pipes, and gutters. Clear gutters of any debris from the fall to prevent a damming effect. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building.
  • Inspect walkways and parking lots for proper drainage. This could alleviate a potential flood and/or slip hazard.
  • Entryways, handrails, and stairwells should be checked to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Post caution signs where water may be present and install mats or non-slip surfaces in the dangerous areas.
  • Protect pipes from freezing. Allow water to drip when temperatures go below freezing. Leave cabinet doors open to circulate warm air, if pipes are under them. Consider shutting off water to outdoor faucets and ensure they are properly drained.
  • Emergency Ready Profile. Contact SERVPRO for a no-cost assessment of your facility. It provides you with a plan to get back to business faster following a disaster.

Make sure your business is ready for the bitterly cold weather that may be ahead. If winter weather strikes, SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia are Here to Help.

Create a Storm Safety Plan

10/28/2019 (Permalink)

Severe storms leaving you with a water damage? Contact the professionals at SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia.

Do you have a storm safety plan for your home and/or business?

Even though severe weather tends to hit Mid-Missouri during spring and the early summer months, severe weather can strike at any time. Since, the weather conditions change in October, we can experience severe weather outbreaks.

Our area has even experienced tornadoes in October. October 29th, 2004, tornado damaged homes in Saline and Pettis counties. According to ABC 17 news, there were 2 tornadoes in October 2007. One traveled through 4 Mid-Missouri counties.

It is best to keep an eye on the forecast and be prepared for storms.  One great way to be prepared is have a storm safety plan in place. Create a written plan and go over it with everyone in the family or at work. Designate an emergency meeting area near the home or place of work, in case you get separated during the storm.

Don’t forget to designate an emergency contact person. Choose a friend or a relative out of state, so they may not be experiencing the same disaster. Teach all adults and responsible children the locations of water, gas, and electric shut-offs can decrease your risk of additional damage and increase your safety.

If a severe storm occurs during this fall season and leaves you with water damage, SERVPRO® of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia is Here to Help®. We understand the unexpected can happen at any time.

Helping Mother Nature

9/2/2019 (Permalink)

When you experience a water damage, contact your local professionals at SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia.

Our Restoration Beginning

8/5/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia is Here to Help.

Norma and Don Rutter opened SERVPRO of Marshall in June of 1984. Phil worked for them for a year before he and Rebecca bought their first franchise in January of 1994. Later in 1999, they purchased their second franchise, opening SERVPRO of Columbia. SERVPRO of Sedalia was later purchased, but was serviced by them, since 1984.

Believe it or not, Phil went across the Missouri River on a boat with air movers and dehumidifiers, during the flood of 1993. He made a risky trip to help his customers. Phil and Rebecca are proud to serve and be a part of the community. Helping our neighbors get back to their homes and businesses after a fire or water damage is why we are Here to Help®.

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

Can you PASS?

Imagine, a fire has just started in your home or business. It is contained, oxygen has not been depleted, and the room temperature has only slightly increased. Do you know how to use a fire extinguisher? Your adrenaline may be pumping when a fire occurs, so knowing how to operate one before is best.

Using an acronym, like PASS, will help in memorizing how to properly operate a fire extinguisher.

  • PULL the pin.
  • AIM low, pointing the nozzle at the base of the fire.
  • SQUEEZE the handle.
  • SWEEP from side to side at the base.

Remember, safety is always important. Evacuate immediately, if…

  • The fire is not contained, smoke is feeling the room, and the temperature is hot.
  • You have the slightest doubt of your ability to fight a fire.
  • The extinguisher is empty and the fire is not out.

Three Types of Water in Water Damages

4/15/2019 (Permalink)

If you have a water damage, contact the professionals at SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia.

To ensure a proper cleanup of a water damage. The type of water must be determined.

Types of Water

Clean Water (Category 1)

Clean water is when the water originates from a sanitary water source. Examples of category 1 water can include: broken water supply lines; tub or sink overflows with no contaminants; and falling rainwater. It should not pose a substantial risk if exposed to water. Clean water can become gray or black water, if it is left untreated.

Gray Water (Category 2)

Gray water is when the water is slightly contaminated.  Examples of category 2 water can include: discharge from dishwashers or washing machines; overflows from washing machines; and overflows from toilet bowls on the room side of the trap with some urine. It has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if consumed. Gray water can become black water, if left untreated.

Black Water (Category 3)

Black water is highly contaminated and can contain fungi, bacteria, chemicals, or other harmful agents. Examples of category 3 water can include: sewage; flooding or any type of natural disaster. It can cause significant adverse reactions to humans if contacted or consumed. Blackwater should always be handled by the professionals.

When you have a water damage, do not leave your property to chance. Call SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia. We take care of those in our community.

If water is rapidly rising around you and your vehicle, get out of your vehicle quickly and move to higher ground. Most vehicles can be swept away by less than 2 feet of moving water. Always be safe and do not underestimate the power of water.

Ice Dams in Marshall, Sedalia, & Columbia

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Demonstrates how ice dams form when snow begins to melt and temperatures are at freezing or below.

Ice dams form when:

  • Snow is present on the roof.
  • Temperature is above 32 degrees Fahrenheit on higher portion of the roof.
  • Temperature is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit on lower portion of the roof.

Snow melts down the roof and freezes once it reaches the cooler portion of the roof. The dam grows from the melting snow and water begins to back up on top of the ice. The water tries to find a way to escape and back-flows under the roof’s shingles and into the structure’s interior.

Ice dams can cause significant water damage to ceilings, walls, insulation, and other areas of your home. If your home or business has been affected by winter damage, call SERVPRO® of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia. We are here to help those in our communities.

Severe Weather: Severe Thunderstorm Watch versus Severe Thunderstorm Warning

7/26/2018 (Permalink)

When storms hit the area, SERVPRO® of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia is Here to Help®.

Do you know the difference between a severe thunderstorm watch and a severe thunderstorm warning?

Watch:  Be Prepared! This is issued by the National Weather Service when conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in and near the watch area. The watch area normally covers numerous counties. They are typically issued for a duration of four to six hours. During the watch, stay informed, review safety rules, and be ready to act if a severe thunderstorm warning is issued.

Warning:  Take Action! This is issued when either indicated by radar or reported by spotters. A warning typically covers the size of a city or small county. They are typically issued for a duration of one hour. People in the affected area should seek safe shelter immediately. Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes with little or no advance warning. Lightening is not a criteria for issuing a severe thunderstorm warning.

5/2/2018 (Permalink)

Have you discovered mold in your home or business? Here mold has been found behind drywall.

When a water source (leaky roof or plumbing) is introduced to a home or business, it can quickly become infested with mold. Mold can spread throughout a property in 48-72 hours. It has the potential to produce allergens and irritants that may cause additional health effects.

When you suspect mold in your home or business, SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia can inspect and assess your property. If mold is discovered, we have the training, equipment, and expertise to handle the situation.

Mold exists almost everywhere, including indoors and outdoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Read over the following mold facts:

  • Mold spores thrive on moisture and can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float in the air. They can enter your home or business through AC/heating systems, doors, or windows.
  • The source of water or moisture must be addressed before the remediation can start. If not, the mold can return.
  • What’s that smell? Mold can produce a musty odor.
  • Higher than normal indoor humidity can aid mold growth. It is best to keep humidity below 45 percent.

Sewer Backups in Marshall, Sedalia, & Columbia

4/2/2018 (Permalink)

Have you experienced a sewer backup? Contact the professionals at SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia to make it "Like it never even happened."

Sewer Backup—What is It and Am I Covered?

A sewer backup occurs when sewage from sanitary sewer lines back up into homes and businesses through drain pipes. Backups create damage to the structure of the property, contents, and can create health hazards.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, most homeowner and business insurance policies do not cover sewer backup. Typically, a specific sewer backup coverage needs to be added to your policy. For most insurers, this is a nominal cost on your annual insurance policy.

There are several causes for a sewer backup to occur in your property. Some include:

  • Blockages from Tree Roots
  • Sanitary Main Blockages
  • Aging Sewer Systems
  • Combined Pipelines

What can you do to help prevent backups?

  • Dispose of grease and paper products properly
  • Cut back tree roots periodically
  • Replace your line with new plastic pipe
  • Correct any illegal plumbing connections
  • Install a backwater prevention valve

Winter Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes Bursting

12/28/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO® of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia can respond faster to your frozen water pipe disaster.

The temperatures have been dropping and the winter weather is here.  When the temperatures go below freezing level, your property is at risk for frozen pipes, which can create a major disaster in your home or business.

Be Prepared

  • Know where your water shut off is located, in case of a frozen water pipe burst.
  • Insulate exposed pipes in your home or business, especially if they are in unheated rooms.
  • Open bathroom and kitchen cabinet doors during cold spells to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
  • During extremely cold weather, keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets. Running water is less likely to freeze.
  • Consider shutting off outdoor faucets and open the outdoor faucet to help ensure it completely drains and the inner valve is shut off.
  • Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.
  • If you plan on being away from your property for an extended period of time, leave the heat on and set the thermostat to at least 55°F.

Discovered Frozen Pipe

  • First sign of freezing is reduced water flow from a faucet.
  • Keep the faucet open when treating frozen pipes.
  • Apply heat to the frozen sections using a heating pad, hair drier, or another safe heat source. Do not use an open flame device.
  • Check additional pipes and faucets for freezing.

When a Pipe Bursts
